Advertising +92 : Sex in TVCs

Neha

Has there been a case where women are shown having orgasm in Pakistani advertising? Got you thinking, right? Well, the answer is yes. Now, now calm down kiddies , the advert was taken off-air after few weeks, but it got us poor marketers rambling about whether to use sex in Pakistani media or not? One thing I know about our society, we are anything but sterile! We a nation of 170.6 million ( Ministry of Economic Affairs and Statistics. Retrieved 17 January 2010)  And according to the stats, we have only thing at our homes, SEX! States don’t lie, baby. But NO we cannot talk about sex on national television…okay this is just to offend all those who think, talking about sex is wrong, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex….sorry, I just got carried away. Anyway, poor Neha Ahmed became the victim of all Moulnas in Pakistan after modeling in Wall’s magnum TVC, Let me jog you memory, the advert starts with a woman closing all the windows and door. Takes her dupatta off and finally approaches refrigerator to have a Magnum bar. Followed by lights going off and stilettos flown in the air, the woman apparently has an orgasm and touches her body spasmodically whilst having bites of the bar. The advert ends with the woman licking her finger after finishing the bar, tada! A perfect recipe to set Moulna brigade on fire. So what was the big idea behind it? It is suggested that most women prefer to have chocolate than sex (news.sky.com) Chocolate has been known as a mood enhancer because it helps releases endorphins.  The advert is targeted at specific gender segmentation, women to be precise.  The woman in the advert goes through different sensory experiences from taste, smell to touch. This chocolate bar has been positioned keeping mind its target market. If one keeps the context and the scientific research in mind, the advertising agency seems to be spot on. However, this ad was lambasted by viewers and critics alike, probably because they missed out on the social, cultural values and psychographics. In order for an advert to be successful it has to be aligned with the macroenvironment of that country. Pakistani culture as for now cannot stand a woman having orgasm on national TV, because we like the real thing, a practical nation eh? Commercial

Transit Media

Pakistani advertiser are lambasted frrquently because of their unorignality and lack of creativity. Jazz's Sach Jazba World Cup 2011 campiagn got pristine marketers scraming out loud about the blatant plagiarism. Apparently, the logo was an inane copy-paste of Zogra's logo, obviously, the ad agency did not reralize that people are smart enought to figure these things out eventually. The plagiarism went to the extent that they actually used the same tutorial used by Zogra.

Zogra

All said and done, I am an optimist, or would I like to thing so. There has been significant amount of change in how companies advertise; new and innovative venues have been explored ableit far and few between. Recently, while driving I came across rather a new media of advertising in Pakistan, transit media.

I found it so interesting that it made me stop the car and shoot, but for some of us, attitde towards Pakistani marketers is never going to change no matter how creative they get, after all it is made-in-Pakista, right?

A man of Philosophy

So,  I happened to be at the opening of Philosophy department today, and may I just add;l  it was a huge success! Probably, because sir Miller is the coolest person you would meet on campus. Of course, his knowledge and way of teaching has a lot to do with the turnout! Kudos to all involved in event management! I know for a fact that Mr. Miller is very dedicate to whatever he undertakes, so I can vouch without a doubt that this department is going to be a success.

Better confounded than cocksure

I wrote, rewrote and then revised what I wanted to write about in this post. I have a feeling of not being able to relate…that is true!!! I do feel disconnected to the mainstream ideologies. I feel a part of a small niche, who knows how to stand up for what they believe in. No matter how strongly they are opposed. I have found a small piece of heaven for myself to ensconced. I believe, everyone has there moments of doubts even the most cockiest insolent person would think on an alone Sunday evening was he right? Does he really believes in what he’s preaching???

No doubt, that it is the age of clash of ideologies. New age vs. old??? New world vs. old? whatever the case, do we need to kill each other because we cannot think alike?  Today when I was communicating my concerns to my Professor, he told me the most comforting thing.

I: Sir, I believe that people who are not able to connect with mainstreams ideas  their life becomes an effort or a task to justify everything in life.

Dr. Kamal: I don’t agree with you. In fact, you have got it all wrong, Omar. People whose life become their work are more

appeased with what they have, of course, you have your moments of confusion while you are arriving to a conclusion but once you are there, people after centuries to come follow you.

And he’s was right. I guess no one appreciated Russell, or Plato in their time. But today people  cite them as a reference.  Because at the end of day it is only you and your conscious, not the world that you have to justify.

Surprise Me

When I's invited by friend to have a dinner at a restaurant called Tiramisu, I have sligth apprehensions, simply because  I had never heard of it. You know, how you get that feeling, when you should never try that thing which you haven't before? Like when I go to Pizza Hut my safest bet is Chicken Fujita for my brother it's Chicken Tikka. I had to convince myself to try Sushi for the first time, but you what, I liked it. So, keeping that feeling in mind, I reluctantly said yes. As I entered the restaurant a dim-lit hall was rather too romantic for a friends'night out but, none-the-less, welcoming. I could here French music playing which is always an added plus for me. The art hung on the walls was rather a bit contemporary but interesting to grab someone's attention. It's a good place to have dinner with your family or date, but it doesn't have much going on for the Kids so it'd be kinda silly to bring them. Finally, the manu arrived and I was handed three books to choose from, Thai, French and ofcourse the dessert to follow up.I chose French, of course. A hot bowl of soup to start with, creamy and filled with all sorts of seas food and sea weed, I'd definitely give an eight to the soup. Next came the apetitzers, chicken frittata with seet corn, it was not much of pleaser, so I'd give it a five, but it tasted better with bread and garilic sauce. The main course was, Lamb chops drench in gravy, bedded on blue cheese and garnised with  asparagus and veges. It's medium done, as I ordered and lived up to my expectations, so i would give it an eight. I was rather surprised by the desssert, yummlish chocolate mountain with vanilla scoope was more than I could ask for. The outer layer was filled up with hot molten chocolate, and it tasted heaven. By that time I had gorged in so much that I had little room left so I could only look at the sexylish dessert and finally decided to make a piece of art of it, a heart. Over all, the experience was nice and I would recommend definitely a visit to the restaurant, a bit pricy but worth going once.   Here is the link if you wanna see the photos

Dish it out

Lately, alright! for more than five years, blogs have been a great way to gaining cheap popularity in the masses...If you have just joined the world, welcome to 2002, oh wait, the maths doesn't match, there is a slim possibility that it can be more than five years, don't be a bitch about it, you get my point! So, let me review some of the 'curious cases of dishing'. Of course, who can forget moi's which makes it to the top of the list, I mean, I have to take me self down, because it was perhaps the most talked about case on the campus. Some random biatches wrote shit about me,and if I may say so I handled it pretty well, applause, applause, takes a bow! But this story reeks like dead raccoon, and is so-yesterday, so lets not talk about it! Yáll know the story by heart , anyway. Lets talk about the more current events. The case of curious Facebook! Some douche who couldn't get any attention from all the ladies on campus decided to get their pictures somehow and post it on his account calling them bitches, sluts and cunts, or maybe he didn't call them all of above, I just added few titles to spice it up for yáll**wink wink** A guy made it to the list too.  The point is not that whether they deserved the titles or not, the point is, some losers will venture to anything to get their five minutes of fame. Of course, I reported the page more than once because some of my friends made it to the biatch list, keep in mind guys bad publicity is still publicity.  Then you come across such moronic blogger who have nothing to say...so, they feed off others...I call them vultures...they merely criticize other bloggers...message to all such vultures...get an opinion bitch...or stop freaking writing... because you ain't got nothing to write about! And when you do, I wish you had rather not! Vultures are as dopey when it comes to posting.Moving to my next issue, is it okay to have an opinion? Of course it is! I mean if you are gonna  make out & get all smoochie in front of people, don't expect them 'not' to talk about it! If you are so discreet get a room for heaven's sake! Don't rub it all up my face! Besides, I don't understand, all these girls & guys would anything but go all baji & Bhai/pristine on you**Irony** if you talk about it. They would suddenly want you believe that they have great morals which makes no sense what-so-ever because morals have nothing to with being you intimate with someone, and you are defiling their 'reputation'', as if they had one to begin with. All in all, these boys & girls are as clueless when in it comes to morals,  as a sheep without a shepherd.

Iadvise:I told her that I would always love her and only her! I'm waiting for a miracle! Can it happen?

I fell in love with a girl at R.C. in 2007. Her personality drove me mad, however, I wasn't able to let her know because she was an extraordinary person & her response was not likely to be normal. Moreover, I also wanted to check myself if I could live without this hard-to-get-girl, I, after sometime realized that I couldn’t. She studied different subjects and we had no class together, so, I was not able to try any of my tricks.  But in 2009, my mental condition started to get affected by this craziness and I decided to talk to this girl about it. We had some discussions. She told me that she didn't want to get involved in these silly things and defined love as bullshit. Some months later she also told me that I wasn't her ‘type’ and should seek another nice girl. She told me that if I was interested in her it was my problem and that there was to be no 'public display' of it from me. And I never did it. She did used to complain sometimes that her not-so-close friends had started asking her if something was going on? I really worshiped her so I used to try and get as much information about her as I could (the physical properties, as I already knew the chemical ones). I used to try and impress her by telling her how much I knew about her, but that used to drive her a bit mad. In June this year, as I continued to show as much determination in being mad about her even after graduating, she came up with an offer. She offered me to be her 'friend of sorts' if I agreed to stop 'the nonsense'. I told her that I would always love her and only her, but I could stop mentioning it when I talk to her. Now we don't meet but stay in-touch with each other on FB. So I'm waiting for a miracle. I also have made a fan group for her on FB and she has joined it. Now such things confuse me. Can it happen?

Dear confused,

This is perhaps the most common problem of all, and I am afraid you approached the girl in a wrong manner to begin with. You mentioned that the girl had a ‘crazy’ personality. You should have elaborated in what way? By the looks of it, she seems like the dorky/held-back type. I think you have done some damage on your own by finding out information about her, and instead of using it to your advantage, annoyed her by telling that you’re keeping tabs on her! In such situations the best thing to do is to keep it low and play cool . The act of desperation should be the last resort to venture, but I thing you took that trip way too early in the journey. However, you case is not completely hopeless. First things, first, please delete that fan group! She is to be flattered anymore! You can pass occasional complimentary remarks that’s all! Keep talking to her on friendly terms.  Keep her posted on your ‘other affairs‘, tell her that you are thankful she bore the whole affair with a nice demeanor. Tip; nothing makes a girl jealous more than seeing a friend/the-could-have-been-lover with another girl. Tell her that you have met this amazing girl, who actually reminds you of her sometimes, expect for she way too beautiful than her. Make her feel that she has missed the train she could have had earlier, had she acted more prudently. That will bring her to her right mind.  Don’t play your cards immediately. I am sure you have much more information that you can use. This formula usually works in a situation like this. Hope it helps.

Iadvice : My friend flirts with my boyfriend...help!:(

Dear Mr. Clicking heart,

I am very moved by your views on love, I am faced with  rather a tricky situation. My best friend, Takeaway and I share everything. I have recently broken up with my boyfriend and hit a bad patch of blue days. One day while I was walking out of the coffee shop, I met Mr.sexyman, he's gorgeous and too has recently come out of a bad relationship. We hit off immediately. We have so much in common. I introduced him to my Friend Takeaway and now they are getting more than friendly. She flirts with him,and calls me a klutz in front of him. I feel insure and threatened.I know my feelings are in insignificant and not based on reality. Should I ignore? Help

Rainbow

Rainbow,

Takeaway is not your freaking friend! Since when did the definition of friend turned into backbiting conniving  bitch? If you have any sense left into you'll beat the shit out of that stinking raccoon and claim sexydamn.  Get rid of your friend as soon as possible and give out an ad for a friend, mention it's be a gay guy, because that lessens the competition. I know my advice to have bad impact on my daily life, but hey you asked! and stop fucking referring to me as clicking heart!

A maiden's desire

Rainbow dream

The Kiss

My rendition of Gustav's 'The Kiss' which influenced Picasso to paint his own version of it.

The nightmares

Once upon a time there was a man, who lived in a small village. The village was an abode of wild savages, of course they all had different ranks and statuses, some were rich and vicious others poor and dishonest, but the fact remained that they were all savages! Blood thirsty, uncouth, greedy and rather proud of their ways. This village of savages was invaded by a group of wicked white ghosts, who were mean and crafty. They enslaved the savages and trained them to be good slaves through their craft. The man I mentioned above had a genetic mutation and turned into a lofty and noble man. But after this metamorphosis that occurred one night he realized that he had to save his fellow villagers. The plight of the poor got his eyes misty. One night he had a dream, he saw a village, that’s filled with his fellow villagers, they were all free, happy and had abandoned their depraved rituals. He saw a prosperous village which was model for all the other villages in the jungle. The next morning he woke up and conjured up such a spell that would cast the mean white ghosts away. Of course he had to fight with the ghosts they were highly skilled and knew their craft very well. Some of the unfortunate villagers who had grown so accustomed to their servile ways thought the man an anarchist and threw stones at him for being ungrateful.  Some denounced him on the grounds that since he didn’t worship the religion of hypocrisy and greed he’s not even one of them. But these allegations had no impact on the man, he’s resolved and refused to give in! He believed in his dream of peace and harmony. At length, the noble man was able to drive the crafty white ghosts away, with his sagaciousness. But he was unaware of the enemies he’d formed within the village. On the surface the villagers were grateful but in their hearts they resented the old man and wanted to kill him, and so they did! So uncanny was this murder that no one knew. They formed a constitution to fulfill old man’s dream in the reverence of his memory. Of course that never happened, years after years passed, calamities befell on that village, and they reverted back to their old ways. But to keep the beacon of his dream burning they gathered under the trees, behind the bushes and accused each other and powers of the wicked wizard of west who’s trying to take their village away and challenge their sovereignty.  So the dream became a fairytale that mothers told their children at night. Like the shoe fits Cinderella, frog turns into a prince, the princess is saved by the knight, and so, this village presented a picture of peace, freedom and civilization. The sad part is fairytales don’t come true, it’s the other stuff that always come true the one which begins with people dying of hunger, throngs killing teenagers and enjoying it and corrupted leaders gouging public money! The nightmares.

Mulligans

In the game of golf an informal player is often granted a second chance to improve the shot, it’s called a mulligan. Sometimes life gives us the same chance, to take another shot at things, which it has offered before, perhaps to improve or achieve what we haven’t been able to in the past. But I couldn’t help wondering, if what we wanted in the past, wasn’t really what we needed in the first place? I know the sentence makes but a little sense. My whole life has been a story of second and third chances, not that I could’ve not achieve it, if I really intended, but I was ambivalent about things and it took me time to make up my mind and by the time I’d done that, the train had left the station, but no regrets. A boy’s dream is always to see his father proud and approve of him, so has been mine. I always felt that; I was being compared to this or that cousin of mine in the family. My father had a dream, to see me as a doctor one day, clichéd I know, quite contrary to any field what I’d have chosen for myself, I perused his dream anyway, but somewhere along the line I lost all mine, of course I never became a doctor, but somewhere down this path of abstinence, I found myself. As the time passed, so did his constant mentions of my cousin joining the med line and becoming a doctor, it got me wondering perhaps he’d have been his son instead of me. During the course of time, however, this whole second chance thing got me thinking that even if I were given a chance to become a doctor, I wouldn’t! because it is not my calling. But few days back when my father introduced me to his friends and the pride he felt in introducing me for being merely his son got me thinking perhaps one doesn’t need second chances to get the approval of their loved ones. Rather it’s following your own heart and coming to yourself that matters the most. I cannot speak for you all, but it certainly has for me.

Say it right!

One thinks years and years of experience would actually let one know, how to, and what to say at the right time, but alas no! It’s not like I can’t tell right from wrong but there are moments when I feel like telling the other person ‘just shut up’ or ‘get out of my face’ but the common courtesy and growing up just thwarts me to act in such a manner. Of course, considering ajj kay halat when every teen is a fine copy of American liberalism ( of course without they knowing what they are representing, because they are just being ‘cool’ or following the fad) I hear nonsense all the time, girls calling each other bitches or guys calling each other dogs, assholes , mo’fucker ad infinitum. To be honest, I have no issues with they calling each other whatever they deem right, but how in this macrocosm do you tell them they are barking up the wrong tree when they try to pull a similar trick on you? Do you respond politely and tell them to buzz off, or do you simply ignore them? I had similar situation in my freshman when a nineteen year old tried to pull up a trick of the simple sort, I was completely mortified and in retrospect, it’d have been better to punch him right in his audacious face, but I moved on and ignored him. But this very question still irritates me sometimes, why can’t I be extreme obnoxious to person when I want to? Who’s obviously being horrible…and what’s the terrible Punjabi theater kay jokes! So kitschy and redundant…just to bring this post home, I am going to leave you guys with a thought, it’s not that I am uptight or self righteous, but some things are part of our culture and I like those things, etiquettes and manners for one are the things I hope to carry forward in my life and if that makes me old school, so be it! At least, I know how to say it right!
